NEWCASTLE HOMES RENOVATIONS

All about wallpaper

Wallpaper can be one of the most expensive surfaces in your home, both for material and install. Designing with and coordinating wallpaper requires tons of forethought and planning. It’s important to get it right. Here are a few tips we’ve learned over the years.

Order early

Wallpaper is likely to be the center of the design of whatever space you’re including it in, so it’s important to select this early.

  • To ensure you get the wallpaper you want, you need to order all that you’ll need up front. By the time your renovation or construction is complete, the centerpiece of your design may be out-of-stock.
  • Get your installer in early to measure the room and calculate how much of the particular wallpaper  you’ll need. This isn’t as simple as square footage, the repeat of the pattern will be an important factor in determining the takeoff and we always order 30-40% extra just in case.
  • Make sure you have a safe space to store your wallpaper away from the project.

Install LAST

This is very important: if a construction worker looks sideways at your wallpaper, it will be destroyed.

Your wallpaper installer should be scheduled after every trade is complete, after all cleans are complete, and after your furniture is in. This is the only way to ensure it doesn’t get damaged.

Your walls need to be PERFECT

Your walls need to be as square as possible, which is seldom the case. We typically have our painters prepare a wall for wallpaper by having them do a “Level 5” finish. This means perfectly smooth and is a wholly different animal to the usual level 3 or 4 finish you see on most walls. Level 5 costs significantly more and is usually installed by a special drywall craftsman with the most experience and best technique and with a different set of tools and materials.

You don't have to do it alone though!

So yeah, she’s really expensive, and very fragile. Great combo.
