What's new?
Recent changes to the local development code, known as the HOME initiatives, have also opened up many beneficial options to facilitate aging in place needs. There are now more and better options for creating multiple residences on one property and far fewer restrictions on how these are sized and placed. It is hoped that this will increase housing density and affordability in Austin, but we hope these new options will lead to a renaissance in multi-generational living as well.
What can you build now?
Almost all properties are now allowed two residences per lot, and in many cases three. These homes can now be big or small, attached or detached, subdivided to be their own properties or kept on one parcel. This opens up a whole new world of possibilities to build a space for your loved-ones to be close-by, but have their own space, maintaining their independence and dignity.
