An Accessible Addition That Helped This Couple Stay in the Home They Love

SUMMARY

Our client needed to add a wing to her existing Zilker home to accommodate her disabled family member.

An architecture firm we work closely with, Barron Custom Design, brought us this client with a design for an addition that would make the family more comfortable. The addition provided more space to live, but also an ADA accessible bathroom, wide hallways and doors and a ramp from the garage up to the house.

What We Did

  • Custom vanity with knee space to accommodate wheelchair
  • Roll-in shower with adjustable-height shower/handheld
  • Grab bars in shower and at toilet
  • Built-in linen cabinet to replace undersink storage lost to ADA vanity

  • Wide hallway to accommodate wheelchair and medical equipment
  • Custom built-in bookshelf below windows for storage

GENERATOR

  • Installed a gas-powered permanent generator to ensure medical equipment stays on in an outage

  • Custom designed walk-in closet for storage

  • EV car charger

Aging in place solutions

As our population ages, many of us have loved ones that will have special needs to maintain their independence and lifestyle and stay healthy and safe.

Other improvements you might consider:

  • Granny flats, mother-in-law suites, accessory dwellings (ADU’s) and apartments
  • Servant quarters for caregivers
  • Retrofitting for ADA mobility
  • Ramps and elevators
  • Curbless showers
  • Medical device facilitation
  • Tech for monitoring and communication

Code Changes

Recent changes to the local development code, known as the HOME initiatives, have also opened up many beneficial options to facilitate aging in place needs.

Almost all properties are now allowed two residences per lot, and in many cases three. These homes can now be big or small, attached or detached, subdivided to be their own properties or kept on one parcel. This opens up a whole new world of possibilities to build a space for your loved-ones to be close-by, but have their own space, maintaining their independence and dignity. This also gives you significant flexibility to build exactly what you need as well as design a space that can be flexible over time to meet your needs through all life stages.
